Dodge Holiday Travel Tips

October 31, 2007

In a national survey conducted by the Dodge Brand along with their launch of the Dodge Grand Caravan, it was found out that 77 percent of Americans plan to drive for their next family getaway. The survey supported by Dodge aimed to provide information on how Americans travel and help them enjoy every minute of their family trip.

Comfort, convenience and fun are the most important things to be considered during family road trips, so travel expert Susan Foster with Dodge offers these trouble-free tips so that your family vacation drive is a quality family time.

— Taking it on the Road. According to the survey, 77 percent of Americans say they plan to drive for their next family vacation, compared to 8 percent who plan to fly.

Part of the appeal of driving is the extra luggage and gear you can bring on your trip. Many of today’s vehicles, such as the all-new 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan, have innovative storage areas that give travelers more packing flexibility than ever before. When packing the vehicle, gather everything in one area and edit to fit. Soft sided bags often squish in more easily than rigid rectangular suitcases.

— Pack it Up. One in four Americans (25%) have experienced stress on a family road trip related to packing the car.

Eliminate packing stress by working in advance of the trip to prep your vehicle.

Decide where things should go based on when they are needed – last in, first out. Use storage bins inside the vehicle to pack the clothes you’re going to travel home in, but don’t include items you need access to first while driving, such as the kids’ stuffed animals they may want on the drive or the book you want to start.

— Stressed to the Max. However fun a road trip may be, nearly six in 10 (59%) Americans have experienced stress before or during an extended family car trip. The most common stress inducers are boredom or lack of entertainment (30%).

Minimize the “Are we there yet?” question. The best way to combat boredom is having a combination of activities at your fingertips. Entertainment features such as DVD players, satellite radio and SIRIUS Backseat TV(TM) have changed the modern American road trip. Classic family games also are great ways to supplement – playing cards or travel board games, looking for license plates from different states, telling jokes or counting cars of a specific color.

— Control Craze. One in three Americans (33%) say that his/her reason to drive rather than fly this holiday season is to maintain control of the trip, including to have the ability to decide when to stop or to go sightseeing. When on the road, three-quarters of Americans (75%) say they enjoy being able to see different parts of the country.

Enjoying the journey — not just the destination — is a definite advantage of car travel. Choosing a vehicle that has a navigation system is an easy way to chart your itinerary, including stops at places of interest, instead of just rest stops. History and geography become real when kids see the country for themselves. Choosing a different route for the return home keeps interest for the entire trip.

“Today’s families are on the move, and the all-new 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan is purpose-built to serve their everyday needs,” said Ralph Gilles, Vice President — Jeep(R)/Truck, Advance Interior and Component Design, Chrysler.

“With new features such as the Swivel ‘n Go(TM) seating system, dual DVD entertainment system and SIRIUS Backseat TV, the Grand Caravan brings the comforts of home on the road.”

GM and White Plains Highlights Fuel Cell Technology

October 25, 2007

Yesterday, General Motors Vice-President for Research and Developemnt Planning, Larry Burns and White Plains Mayor Joseph Delfino met at the White Plains City Hall after a GM hydrogen powered ride for the launching of the new Project Driveway program in Westchester and the New York Metropolitan area.

The Mayor and the GM exec arrived in a Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell vehicle at the event. The Chevrolet Equinox is one of the 100 fuel cell vehicles to be test-driven by families next year. The 100 vehicles will be distributed to private and commercial volunteers for the national test drive to last for three to 30 months. Los Angeles and Washington D.C. are also included in the national test drive.

“I feel like I touched a little bit of the future today,” Mayor Delfino said. “We’re very pleased to work with General Motors on this important test of this new technology. Zero-emissions performance is closer than people think.

“White Plains has had a longstanding history of research and demonstration programs for alternate fuels. Today, GM has provided us the opportunity to introduce their Equinox Fuel Cell vehicle on our city streets. It is another step closer toward our shared goals of a cleaner city. I would like to encourage all companies to identify new technologies that will make our air a little cleaner and our city and state a little greener.”

The local government of White Plains in cooperation with Shell Hydrogen constructed a hydrogen filling station at the White Plains Public Works Depot. The station for fuel cell powered vehicles is located in a gated lot for better service to the Project Driveway customers and will be opened in November.

“We appreciate the leadership the city of White Plains had demonstrated in its support of alternative fuel vehicles, including GM’s hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles,” said GM’s Burns. “We are pleased the citizens of the Westchester County area will have the opportunity to refuel the GM Project Driveway fuel cell powered vehicles at a new, state-of-the art Shell hydrogen refueling facility in White Plains.”

The Vehicles with Automatic Turn-Off

October 23, 2007

For daily commuters driving from their homes to their workplaces and who unfortunately are stuck in traffic jams every morning, fuel efficiency is a great issue. A new feature towards fuel efficiency that will greatly benefit consumers especially the commuters is the cylinder deactivation system.

The cylinder deactivation system boosts fuel efficiency by automatically turning off the vehicles’ engine when it is in the middle of the traffic or when stopped by a traffic light. This feature had long been used in crossovers and SUVs, known to be gas guzzlers. With the benefits it brings to consumers, the cylinder deactivation system is starting to be widespread not just in the large vehicle segments but also in passenger cars. It is one of the new technologies that the automotive industry offers the consumers to improve fuel economy.

“It’s adding that extra gas economy that everyone’s looking for right now,” said R.W. McKay, a general sales manager with Gordon Chevrolet in Tampa, Fla., who has the system on his 2007 Chevrolet Impala.

”The consumer wants to have a powerful engine but hates to pay for the fuel that comes with the V8,” said Gottfried Schiller, director of engineering for engine management systems at auto supplier Bosch. He said the automakers ”are looking for an effective way to give them both.”

General Motors, Honda Motors and Chrysler LLC offer this system in their vehicles having V6 and V8 engines.

The Luxury Hot Car List for the 2007 Third Quarter

October 19, 2007

Once again, like that of the second quarter the premium BMWs dominates forbesautos’ luxury hot car list. These vehicles that gracefully included are the most researched vehicles in the site belonging in the premium or the luxury category.

Below is the complete Luxury Hot Car list from

10. 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class
Starting MSRP: $43,350

During the summer, online car shoppers naturally gravitate toward open-topped sports cars, and for the second straight quarter, consumer interest in the convertible Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class held steady. Interest may even hold through the fall, because the SLK’s retractable hardtop converts this drop-top into a coupe in seconds.

9. 2008 BMW 5 Series Sedan
Starting MSRP: $44,300

The midsize 5 Series Sedan is one of five BMW models to make our Luxury Car Hot List for the second straight quarter. The 2008 version was introduced in May. An updated base six-cylinder engine is both more powerful and fuel efficient than before and a turbo-charged version has been added for those who crave more performance.

8. 2007 BMW X5
Starting MSRP: $45,900

As if to prove that the new breed of car-based SUVs, called “crossovers,” really are as popular as auto marketers say, the X5 made our list for a second consecutive quarter. Though it’s hard to tell by looking at it, BMW redesigned its midsize SUV for 2007 and made it larger inside and out.

7. 2007 BMW 3 Series Coupe
Starting MSRP: $35,300

BMW intends the 3 Series Coupe for drivers who need a full back seat on occasion. But rather than merely jettison the rear doors, the Bavarian manufacturer gives its coupe version of the 3 Series an entirely different body than the four-door sedan. The coupe is sleeker, narrower and lower than the 3 Series Sedan, with slightly longer dimensions.

6. 2007 Acura TL
Starting MSRP: $33,625

Like the BMW 3 Series Sedan and Coupe, the Acura TL shows that interest in entry-level luxury runs strong. The TL makes the list of 10 most researched luxury cars for consecutive quarters. Japan-based Acura, a division of Honda, remains the only non-European brand in the running. Despite the car’s accessible price, the TL includes plenty of advanced features.

5. 2007 Acura MDX
Starting MSRP: $39,995

Breaking into our Luxury Car Hot List for the first time, the Acura MDX SUV leans toward the sporty side of the sport-utility combination — much like the BMW X5, the only other SUV on this list.

4. 2007 Jaguar XKR Coupe
Base MSRP: $85,835

The swift, luxury-laden XKR Coupe broke into our top 10 list of most researched luxury cars in the third quarter. The XKR packs more power than the standard-issue XK, which Jaguar reintroduced as an all-new coupe and convertible for the 2007 model year.

3. 2007 BMW 7 Series Sedan
Base MSRP: $75,800

Like the Mercedes S-Class at the top spot, the 7 Series Sedan from BMW held its high rank among most researched luxury models and stayed in third place. The flagship BMW sedan enters the 2008 model year carrying over the same prices for all three variants: $75,800 for the 750i, $78,900 for the stretched 750Li, and $122,600 for the V12 760Li.

2. 2007 BMW 3 Series Sedan
Base MSRP: $32,400

As the lowest priced vehicle on this list, the BMW 3 Series Sedan shows serious staying power and remains among our hottest luxury models for the second straight quarter. In fact, in the third quarter, BMW’s smallest sedan moved up three spots, from fifth to second, even as the current generation entered its third year. BMW last launched a redesigned 3 Series in May 2005.

1. 2007 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Base MSRP: $85,750

It must be that people preparing to sink as much as $180,000 into a new car examine their conquest very carefully, because for the second consecutive quarter, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is our most searched-for luxury car. As Mercedes’ top sedan, the S-Class is loaded with standard high-tech features and offers just as many luxury add-ons.

Silver tops vehicle colors

October 16, 2007

For the past seven years, silver had been one the most famous colors of brand new vehicles leaving behind the classic black, white and gray. Different shades of every color had been introduced by automakers but those did not shake the grounds for silver. According to statistics, in 1999, silver entered the top three vehicle colors and eventually became number one in 2001 not just in North America but globally.

Silver is the color that shows off a vehicle’s shape and design features than other colors making it the top performer according to PPG Industries, the world’s leading manufacturer of transportation coatings.

On Wednesday, PPG will unveil the results of its annual “colour popularity survey” and according to Jane Harrington-Durst, the company’s manager of colour styling, “silver is still number one in North America as well as globally.”

While silver continues to dominate the car colour market, there are whispers it may be losing its grip. “Silver is starting to decline and other hues such as blue and black are emerging to take some of silver’s market share,” Harrington-Durst says.

Also according to her, new silver shades are tinted with other colors and are to be moved to charcoal range. New silver combinations will present a car an indecent effect and could really change color as you look at the car in different slants.

U.S. market forecaster Bob Prechter believes silver suits our “social mood,” because our culture is already enamored of technology and cool, high-tech gadgetry. They like the chic minimalist color because it’s futuristic and space-age, he says. He also suspects that silver – as a commodity, currently trading vigorously on the stock market – is perceived as a color that reflects money, success and prestige.

If you want to know why silver is the best vehicle color, might as well ask the most reliable sources, the silver car owners. Most of them said that it stays tidy despite the backdrop of gritty urban environment. It is also a good color to hide tiny scratches and dents.

For Sue Georgas, silver is the easiest color to maintain. If you buy a black, you can expect a weekly carwash.

For others, silver is also a safer color. In 2003, the British Medical Journal published a study that suggested “”silver-colored cars are 50 per cent less likely to get involved in serious accidents than cars of any other color.”

Also, the Vehicle Color Study conducted by Australia’s Monash University Accident Research Centre revealed that blacks are most likely involved in car crashes than any other car color.

Shareholders voted for Daimler AG

October 9, 2007

Last Thursday, the Extraordinary Shareholders Meeting of the DaimlerChrysler AG took place in Germany resulting to a change in its corporate name to Daimler AG, slashing the Chrysler name. It had been known that the merging of Chrysler and the Daimler-Benz AG, which the group had been formerly known before the merging had already gained criticisms from its dissidents.

The meeting was called upon in August after the selling of Chrysler LLC to Cerberus Capital Management LP based in New York. Daimler CEO, Dieter Zetsche did not mention any detail of the failed fuse with Chrysler in his speech during the meeting but emphasized that the name change will cost the company at least $100 million and that the change will be complete in April next year. The German CEO also laid the company’s plans after the renaming to making the new Daimler AG a “green” company.

To sum up, we are not striving to become the world’s largest automotive company. Instead, our aim is to be one of the most respected and admired on a permanent basis,” Zetsche said. “We’ve made massive investments in research and development, and today we have gained additional know-how in areas such as CO2 reduction, emission reduction, and vehicle safety,” he said.

“Our earnings will be more sustainable, as in the future we will no longer be so strongly dependent on the volatile North American volume market. We have more organizational and investment strength, as Chrysler retains its healthcare and pension liabilities, which total ($52 billion),” Zetsche added.

According to the company’s board of management, dropping the Chrysler name will lead to clear distinction between the corporate name and its brand names.

“When the focus is on the company as a whole in its dealings with political decision-makers and the general public, in the financial markets, in its relations with the business media, and as an employer, the automaker wants to present itself as Daimler, providing an umbrella designation for all of the individual product brands,” Zetsche said.

“Wherever the company is dealing directly with customers, and in areas where the focus is primarily on products of a single brand, the corresponding brand name will be used. The product brands Mercedes-Benz, Maybach, smart, AMG, Freightliner, Sterling, Western Star, Detroit Diesel, Setra, Thomas Built Buses, Orion, and Mitsubishi Fuso will serve as the company’s ‘business cards’ to the customers,” Zetsche said.

Zetsche also highlighted that the company had paid Ford and its British subsidiary, Jaguar $20 million for the use of the Daimler name.

Maserati Parade in the Columbus Day Parade in New York

October 5, 2007

On October 8, 2007, the 63rd annual Columbus Day Parade will be lead by a convoy of classic and contemporary Maserati sports and luxury cars in Fifth Avenue, New York. Bearing the sophisticated and unique Italian auto engineering and design, a wide variety of Maseratis will be showcased from the Maserati Spyder with its 16 cylinder engine that garnered the vehicle the world’s speed record in 1929 to the 2007 Quattroporte Automatic four-door sedan that speeds up to in just 5.5 seconds.

The exhibition will give car enthusiasts the opportunity to get a glance of the magnificent Maseratis and at the same time also be given the chance to win a 2008 Maserati GranTurismo via a raffle draw. The proceeds of the exclusive raffle will benefit the scholarship programs of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, the group who organized the Columbus Day Parade.

From, these are the Maseratis included in the car exhibition:

• 1960 Maserati 5000 GT: This striking automobile, the second of 34 5000 GTs built, is identical to the model built for the Shah of Iran in 1959. It was displayed at the 1959 Turin Motor Show and uses the Maserati 450 S race car engine and is capable of a top speed of over 170 mph.

• 1970 Maserati Ghibli Spyder SS: The Maserati Ghibli Spyder went into production in 1969 and, as an SS model, is extremely rare — only 25 were built! The model in the 2007 Columbus Day Parade had only one prior owner, a Neapolitan businessman who purchased it in 1970 to help win the affection of a woman he considered the most beautiful in Naples. They subsequently married and are still together to this day.

• 1971 Maserati Ghibli SS: the Maserati Ghibli SS debuted at the 1966 Turin Motor Show. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who was named Car Designer of the 20th Century, the very low and particularly slender design was powered by a 360 hp V8, giving it a top speed of 185 mph.

• 2004 Maserati MC 12: the MC 12 was developed to signal Maserati’s return to racing after 37 years. The two-door mid-engine coupe is powered by a 6 liter, V12 engine producing 630 horsepower. In 2005, the MC 12 won FIA GT Manufacturers Cup with almost double the score of the next team.

• 2007 Maserati Quattroporte Automatic: The Quattroporte Automatic is considered to be the most stylish sedan in production and is powered by a 400 horsepower V8 engine.

Your Windshield Spells Safety

October 3, 2007

Commonly, we think our windshields are just pieces of materials that protect us from extreme cold and heat outside, wind, rain, debris and insects but its more than that. Compared to automotive engineers, car owners have very limited knowledge on how a windshield really functions. While consumers worry about leaks, bugs, cracks that visibly damage our vehicles, the engineers concern are more of protecting our vehicles structural integrity and consumer safety.

The windshield is part of a vehicle’s safety restraint system (SRS). This safety system also includes air bags and seat belts. If one of this equipment is damaged or is not functioning properly, the function of the whole system is in question posing danger to its passengers.

The SRS system encloses and restrains passengers inside the vehicle in events like head-on collisions and rollovers. According to statistics from the National Traffic Safety Administration, more than 40,000 Americans died and more than 5 million were injured from highway crashes every year. Of these casualties, more than 30 percent were due to vehicle occupants ejected from the vehicle or are injured during rollovers.

Aside from protecting passengers from elements outside the vehicle, the windshields also supports the roof thereby preserving the function of the passenger compartment ad preventing it from collapsing and crushing the driver and his passengers.

To add to the common information about your windshields, here are its five most important functions from

• The most obvious windshield function is, of course, visibility. Unlike drivers of old, we do not wear goggles that keep bugs out of our eyes or highway debris from hitting our face. Even so, the modern windshield can become pitted and scratched from minute dirt and sand particles. Pebbles and stones can fracture the glass causing dings that, if left unattended, can affect vision.

• The second windshield function is not as obvious. In many cars and trucks, the windshield supports the passenger side airbag during deployment. If a windshield is replaced improperly, the windshield could become detached from the vehicle in an accident. If this happens, the passenger side airbag will not deploy properly.

• Thirdly, windshields cushion the blow if a vehicle occupant is thrown forward in a crash. Windshields are made of two layers of glass sandwiched around a layer of polyvinyl material. The glass may break but the polyvinyl layer is flexible and cushions the impact. This feature explains why windshields are made of glass not plastic. Plastic is rigid and unforgiving to a person’s head and neck.

• The fourth windshield safety attribute is closely related to the third. When the windshield cushions the occupants’ impact, it also keeps the occupants within the relative safety of the passenger compartment. If the windshield becomes separated from the vehicle, the occupants could be ejected through the windshield opening and onto the roadway. Outside the vehicle, the danger of being crushed by the vehicle is greatly enhanced.

• Finally, there is the integrity of the passenger compartment. Years ago, most vehicles had steel A-pillars to support the roof. Today, it is the windshield that provides much of the support that prevents the roof’s collapse during vehicle roll-overs.
